I have shown this cartoon to a couple of friends and relatives and invariably they pause while they go through the song in their heads to determine the gift given on the sixth day of Christmas, before yelling out “six geese a-laying!” or “six geese are laying!”.

What would Santa do if there were no reindeer to pull his sleigh? Suppose there was a reindeer strike because they were demanding higher wages. My guess is that he would attempt to recruit any replacements he could find. This cartoon is my interpretation of how his sleigh team might look.

This cartoon is indicative of the inherent perils Santa must face as he delivers gifts on Christmas Eve. I thought about typical car travel problems faced, such as the inevitable flat tyre that needs to be replaced and considered what the equivalent might be for a team of reindeer pulling a sleigh.

I figured I’d give Santa a bit of a break after having him bounding across the desert. This cartoon has him and his poor exhausted reindeer resting on top of a plane.

Many years ago, Rolf Harris sang a song called “Six White Boomers”. It was about a team of kangaroos leading Santa across the Australian outback. When I first listened to the song, I think I imagined the trip as shown in the cartoon here.

Although it is known that bulls can’t actually see the colour red as humans do, it is still a common misconception that they can. This cartoon subscribes to the erroneous belief, throwing Santa into the awkward situation of emerging from a fireplace to be confronted with a less than impressed bull at the brink of his tolerance for such a flamboyant intruder.

A hearing impaired Rapunzel throws down random objects at the pleas of her knight without shining armour. This was the idea for the Rapunzel cartoon. I could have easily included many other items rhyming with ‘hair’, but the list items were becoming a bit obscure and it probably would have been overkill.

This cartoon was a part of a few different ideas I had for Christmas cards. I hope to colour the others at some point and include them in the Colour Gallery as well, but in the mean time, keep an eye out for them within the Black & White gallery.
