Considerations for this cartoon included chefs / cooks, piping icing onto a cake and plumbers bearing wrenches, working on pipes. I wanted to be able to draw a collection of eleven characters, but have them do their own things while still being tied together by a ‘piping’ theme. Cake decoration and plumbing felt a bit restrictive (as did the original common version with people playing flutes).

What would Santa do if there were no reindeer to pull his sleigh? Suppose there was a reindeer strike because they were demanding higher wages. My guess is that he would attempt to recruit any replacements he could find. This cartoon is my interpretation of how his sleigh team might look.

This cartoon is indicative of the inherent perils Santa must face as he delivers gifts on Christmas Eve. I thought about typical car travel problems faced, such as the inevitable flat tyre that needs to be replaced and considered what the equivalent might be for a team of reindeer pulling a sleigh.

Many years ago, Rolf Harris sang a song called “Six White Boomers”. It was about a team of kangaroos leading Santa across the Australian outback. When I first listened to the song, I think I imagined the trip as shown in the cartoon here.
